Dental Trauma

Kids are always active and enjoy playing outdoor sports such as cycling, skateboarding, etc. However, with that comes bruised knees, scraped elbows and other injuries. That said, outdoor activities also increase the risk of dental trauma in children.

Dental trauma can damage the teeth and the surrounding areas and can be present in different forms. The upper front teeth are most prone to dental trauma and may include chipping, loosening, fracture or avulsion. However, in most cases, mild dental trauma go unnoticed by parents can be detected only during dental examinations.

Types of Dental Trauma

  • Fractured teeth: An accident or a fall can cause the teeth to chip off and expose the inner layers. So, it is important to evaluate the chipped to teeth to determine the depth of the fracture. While mild fractures can be smoothed easily, deeper fractures may require more extensive treatment.
  • Loosened teeth: In case of loosened or displaced teeth, the treatment may vary depending on the severity of the injury. Typically, mild displacement or loosened teeth can be monitored easily. However, in case of a severe injury, treatment may be needed or even tooth extraction. While mildly loosened teeth can tighten up over time, it is important to visit your dentist regularly to rule out possibility of any infection. Some signs of infection include change of colour, abscess, swelling, increased mobility or discomfort. Often, the pediatric dentist may get an X-Ray done on your child’s teeth to determine the health of the traumatized teeth.
  • Avulsed Teeth: Avulsed tooth is a severe form of dental trauma. It usually happens when tooth/teeth are knocked off completely from their socket. Time is an important factor when it comes to treatment of avulsed permanent teeth. Avulsed tooth has to be kept under milk or salt water to preserve its vitality until the patient approaches the dentist. Tooth should not be washed under the running water. The sooner an avulsed permanent tooth can be re-implanted, the better can it be treated. If possible, take your child to a dentist immediately.
