Tooth Extraction
Tooth extraction is a common procedure and involves removing of a primary tooth from the socket in the alveolar bone. At Little’s Dent, we specialize in tooth extraction and ensure the child has a good experience.
Our team makes sure the child is comfortable and without any anxiety before the tooth extraction procedure.
When is tooth extraction done?
In most cases, children lose their milk teeth naturally and make way for the permanent teeth. However, in some cases, milk teeth are unable to fall on their own or damaged due to external factors and need professional help. In such cases, tooth extraction becomes inevitable. Below, we have mentioned a few extreme cases when tooth extraction may be the only solution.
- Trauma to the teeth: Primary teeth can get damaged, cracked, chipped or detached completely from the socket due to an injury or trauma due to an accident or an unfortunate fall. While other treatment may be considered to restore the teeth, if it is a severe case and beyond repair, we recommend tooth extraction.
- Severe tooth decay: Milk teeth are more prone to decay if good oral hygiene is not followed. Moreover, the tooth enamel is thinner in primary teeth making it prone to decay and cavities. We recommend tooth extraction in case a tooth is decayed beyond repair. Also, after tooth extraction, the tooth or teeth are replaced with a space maintainer until the permanent tooth grows.
- Over-retained tooth: If the milk teeth remain in their place for too long and fail to fall off on its own, permanent teeth may start crowding the space. This overcrowding of permanent teeth may lead to misaligned teeth or other orthodontic treatments. To avoid any major complications, we perform tooth extraction.
How is the tooth extraction procedure done?
- Before the tooth extraction we take an X-Ray of the child’s teeth and mouth. This will help us to get a better idea of the position of the teeth root and surrounding bone structure and analyze the situation better.
- In most primary teeth extraction cases, we administer local anesthesia to numb the area. This will ensure the child does not feel any pain when the extraction procedure is being carried out.
- After numbing the area with anesthesia, the tooth is removed using specialized tools without damaging the surrounding bone structure.
- Once the tooth is extracted, the tooth socket is closed using a sterile gauze and pressure is applied for a few minutes. In some cases, stitches may be needed or space maintainers may be used to ensure the child’s permanent teeth grow easily.
